Voters urged to vote for an experiences, progressive woman and elect Ivana Bacik on July 8

06 July 2021

The Dublin Bay South bye-election offers voters the opportunity to challenge the political consensus and return a progressive, constructive woman to represent the constituency in Dáil Éireann, according to Ivana Bacik.

Speaking at a campaign update today with her Director of Elections, Duncan Smith, TD, Ivana said:

“During this campaign I’ve focused on positive solutions to the issues facing people across the constituency. For instance, I’ve championed new legislation to give renters a break and remove the housing insecurity that haunts so many families and individuals. I’ve proposed a new approach to the future management of Dublin Bay that will ensure environmental protection is a priority. I’ve argued for a radical change in housing policy so that publicly-funded affordable housing is available and becomes the mainstay of housing supply. I’ve also called for a ‘Donogh O’Malley’ moment in relation to childcare that would make a huge difference in the lives of so many young families currently struggling to make ends meet.

“I am proud of the positive, dynamic campaign that we’ve run. I am so grateful to the Labour Party members who have backed me from day one and to the many non-party activists, friends, neighbours and constituents who have supported me during the campaign.

“Not one vote has yet been cast. From now until polling day, my team and I will be working flat out to deliver three key messages:

  • A vote for Ivana Bacik is the best way to challenge the current government’s failings on key issues such as housing and childcare;
  • A vote for Ivana Bacik is a vote for a constructive, principled legislator who has a proven track record of delivering change;
  • A vote for Ivana Bacik will ensure that a progressive woman is returned, in a constituency currently only represented by men.

Director of Elections, Duncan Smith said, “From the outset I believed that we could win this. The attempt by Fine Gael and Sinn Fein to monopolise the election for their own interests has failed. As the recent poll shows, Ivana’s campaign has momentum, we are winning votes on each door that we knock, and we won’t stop until polling day.

“I would urge every voter to make their voice heard in this important bye-election. This will be a very close election and may well come down to a handful of votes. The choice is between electing another backbench Government TD or electing an outstanding campaigner and legislator in Ivana Bacik. We’ll be working day and night between now and close of polls on Thursday 8th July to win the trust of voters and elect Ivana Bacik to Dáil Éireann.”
