PRESS RELEASE – 2nd February 2009

Senator Ivana Bacik expresses support for workers at Waterford Glass

Senator Ivana Bacik, Independent Dublin University Senator, today issued a statement of support for the workers at Waterford Glass.

Senator Bacik, whose grandfather Karel Bacik re-established Waterford Glass when he came to Ireland from Czechoslovakia after World War II, expressed her support for the workers who are continuing a sit-in today at the Kilbarry factory. The sit-in began on Friday when the Receiver for the company announced that he was ending the manufacturing process with immediate effect.

Senator Bacik said today:

"It is very sad to see manufacturing closed down at this historic factory, which for so many years has been an iconic name in Irish industry. I urge the Government to do all in their power to ensure that Waterford Glass can continue in business. This is vital for the workers at the factory and all those businesses that depend on Waterford Glass. It is also very important for the community in Waterford city and county, and for the reputation of Irish industry generally, that the company is supported in this difficult time."
