Renewing Irish Politics
A serious re-think of Irish constitutional politics is needed to create a genuinely pluralist society. I have participated in the Belfast Agreement’s human rights consultation process, and have campaigned for greater civil liberties protection at national and EU level. I will campaign for:
- Breaking the link between politics and big business through State funding of the political system.
- Tackling corruption in politics through adoption of an ‘open government’ policy aimed at increasing transparency at all levels of political decision-making.
- Modernising and secularising the Irish Constitution, and removing clauses such as women’s ‘life within the home’.
- The expansion of a social Europe; addressing the democratic deficit within EU structures, and ensuring greater Oireachtas scrutiny over EU measures.
