Senator Bacik announces event to mark 90th anniversary

of Women’s Vote and Markiewicz Election

 

 

Senator Ivana Bacik, Independent Dublin University Senator, is today presenting details about an event being held to commemorate the the 90th anniversary of the 1918 election (held on 14th December 1918), the first election in which women had the right to vote, and in which Constance Markiewicz was elected as the first woman TD and MP.

 

At a press conference held at 11.30am today Wed 3rd December 2008 in the AV Room, Leinster House, Senator Bacik will announce details of the commemorative event to be held on Tuesday 9th December 2008.

 

The event, ‘Oireachtas Women 1918-2008’, will consist of a ceremony, to take place in the Dáil Chamber on 9th December. All living former and current women TDs and Senators have been invited to attend the Chamber at 1pm on 9th December for a photograph and the reading of a speech by Constance Markiewicz.

 

At the press conference on Wed 3rd December, prominent women representatives from each of the main political parties will be in attendance to announce the details of this historic event.

 

Along with Senator Ivana Bacik, Mary O’Rourke TD, Joan Burton TD, Senator Frances Fitzgerald and Mary White TD will be in attendance at 11.30am on Wed 3rd December in the AV Room, Leinster House.

 

Speaking about the event, Senator Bacik said:

 

“It is important that we mark this historic anniversary both by celebrating and honouring the many women who have been elected to the Dáil or Seanad since 1918, but also by noting how small the numbers of women are as a proportion of our elected representatives overall. More must be done to encourage women to enter political life and events like this may help to raise awareness about the need for more women politicians.”
