Press Release: BACIK WELCOMES NEWS OF UNIVERSITIES’ RANKING
Senator Ivana Bacik has welcomed the news that both Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin have been ranked within the top 100 Universities in the world in the latest Times Higher Education-QS world university rankings.
Senator Bacik said: “This is a remarkable achievement by two Irish universities in a climate of increasing difficulty for the education sector, when third-level institutions, just like primary and secondary schools, are facing severe cutbacks.
“Having attended yesterday’s rally against cutbacks by Dublin Institute of Technology Students’ Union, at the Dept of Finance, I would also give my support to DIT which was ranked 326th internationally in the same survey.
“While the achievements of Trinity and UCD are very impressive, third level institutions generally are struggling in the current financial climate. For example, savage cutbacks at the Dublin Institute of Technology, the largest Irish third-level institution with 22,000 students, have meant the closure of labs and libraries, the cancelling of classes and even the piling up of rubbish on certain campuses.
“This cannot be allowed to continue. Investment in research is crucial to job creation – our third-level sector must remain highly ranked internationally if we are to attract enterprise here.”
