Update from Ivana – May 2012
Welcome to my website. I was delighted and honoured to have been re-elected in April 2011 to the Seanad on the Dublin University panel. I was also delighted to have become leader of the Labour group in the Seanad, and to be Deputy Leader of Seanad Éireann. I have been working hard to represent the graduates of Trinity College and the Dublin Institute of Technology since my election, and will continue to do so, with your support.
I am on unpaid leave from my lecturing position at Trinity Law at present, in order to focus on the political and representative work of the Seanad. On this website, you will see details of the work I have been doing in the Seanad over the last few years, and the issues that I have raised and will continue to raise there.
I would of course be happy to raise any issues on your behalf in the Seanad. I also organise regular tours of Leinster House and again would be delighted to invite you to join us on one of those over the coming months. Do get in touch on ivana.bacik@oireachtas.ie – and thanks again for your support.
Over the coming month I will be canvassing for a Yes vote in the Stability Treaty referendum to be held on Thursday 31st May. I enclose a link to a guide I have written on reading and understanding the text of the Treaty, and you will see below three key reasons why I am calling for a yes vote. You will also see a link to my information leaflet on the Treaty above.
Best wishes,

WHY I AM CALLING FOR A YES VOTE ON 31ST MAY
Stability – this Treaty contains provisions designed to help in maintaining a stable euro, and is part of a package of different measures designed to bring about recovery and growth in the eurozone. Its ratification by Ireland is likely to increase investor confidence in this country – recent job creation announcements have been largely reliant on foreign direct investment and we need to ensure that investors are not scared off by the uncertainty that would ensue if we were to vote No.
Safety Net – if we fail to ratify this Treaty, we will not have access to the funds in the ESM (the European Stability Mechanism) if we need a second bailout once the current Troika (IMF/EU/ECB) programme we are in comes to an end (late 2013). Conversely, the fiscal targets laid down in the Treaty will not apply to us until a period after we come out of the current Programme – since that Programme overrides the terms of the Treaty.
Solidarity – this is not an EU Treaty and does not require the assent of all member states of the EU to come into effect. In other words, we do not have a veto – the Treaty will go ahead even if Ireland does not ratify it, but we would be excluded.
